Texas went dry before the rest of the country did. Rita Cook walks through the political and moral campaign that pushed statewide prohibition into law, the scandal that turned public opinion, and the ways Dallas and Fort Worth kept drinking anyway. Blind tigers, bootleggers, and bathtub gin kept the taps flowing even after the law said stop. Rita Cook is a freelance writer and historian based in Arlington whose work has appeared in the Washington Times, Dallas Morning News, and Fort Worth Star-Telegram. She co-authored Prohibition in Dallas & Fort Worth: Blind Tigers, Bootleggers and Bathtub Gin and has published four books of local history including A Brief History of Fort Worth.

Rita Cook
Rita Cook is an award-winning American author, journalist, editor, broadcaster, film producer, travel writer, and visual artist whose multifaceted career spans more than three decades. Based in the Dallas–Fort Worth area of Texas, she has established herself as a respected voice in journalism, publishing, media production, and the arts, with a body of work that reflects extensive international experience and a lifelong commitment to storytelling. Cook has written over 1,500 article to date from a political column to travel, auto, metaphysical and lifestyle columns and articles for national and international newspapers and magazines. She is the EIC for The Insider Mag and is the author of 12 published books encompassing local history, paranormal history, nonfiction reference works, travel guides, and fiction. Her titles include A Brief History of Fort Worth, Haunted Fort Worth, Haunted Dallas, Haunted Bartlesville, Oklahoma, Ghosts of Beaumont, Port Arthur and Beyond, Prohibition in Dallas and Fort Worth, The Complete Guide to Robert’s Rules of Order Made Easy (Gold Medal Winner of 2009 FPA President’s Book Awards), A Survival Guide for Independent Producers, Wedding Vows and Toasts, So Mote It Be, Angel’s Destiny, and Tourist Town Guides: Fredericksburg, Texas. She has also contributed as a ghostwriter on numerous projects covering business, education, and lifestyle subjects and is working on her doctorate in Quantum Metaphysics.
