Dr. Andy Amato examines how our reflex toward innovation keeps us treating symptoms instead of causes, inventing new ways to manage personal and social breakdowns without confronting what produces them in the first place. That pattern, he argues, feeds the growing sense that we are living through something terminal.

Who's speaking
Andy Amato
Andy Amato is an artist, writer, and teacher. He is professor of philosophy at the University of Texas at Dallas, Co-director of the Center for Values in Medicine, Science, and Technology, and Coordinator for the North Texas Philosophical Association. He is the author of two books on Shakespeare and philosophy, as well as several articles and anthology chapters. His current research focuses on addiction, technology, and utopia. Outside of academia, he has written art reviews for Arts and Culture Texas, Glasstire, and Might Be Good. He is a former founding member of the Dallas-based art collective, Muscle Nation, and his paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in numerous curated group shows.
