we keep turning to technology to save us, but we fail to address our fundamental social and psychological problems. We come up with technologically novel ways to treat the symptoms of personal and societal ills but keep ignoring and adding to the underlying conditions that cause those ills. This tendency certainly contributes to the growing sense of the “apocalyptic.”

We reach for technology as a cure, but the underlying problems stay untouched. Dr. Andy Amato examines how we devise novel treatments for personal and social breakdowns while ignoring the conditions that produce them in the first place. That gap, he argues, feeds the growing sense that we are living in apocalyptic time. The talk draws on philosophy of technology and critical theory to ask what happens when the cure becomes part of the sickness.

Who's speaking
Andy Amato
Andy Amato is an artist, writer, and teacher. He is professor of philosophy at the University of Texas at Dallas, Co-director of the Center for Values in Medicine, Science, and Technology, and Coordinator for the North Texas Philosophical Association. He is the author of two books on Shakespeare and philosophy, as well as several articles and anthology chapters. His current research focuses on addiction, technology, and utopia. Outside of academia, he has written art reviews for Arts and Culture Texas, Glasstire, and Might Be Good. He is a former founding member of the Dallas-based art collective, Muscle Nation, and his paintings and sculptures have been exhibited in numerous curated group shows.
